Dock 02 5 19 2017MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (5/19/17) — The public is invited to attend a ribbon cutting and get a first look at the new boat dock at Lake Malone State Park at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, May 26.

The ribbon cutting will take place at the new dock , located at 150 Beachview Lane in Dunmor. The event will kick off the summer season at Lake Malone State Park and celebrate the local community who made the new dock possible.

After the old dock was condemned in December 2016, the local community rallied to find a solution. The Friends of Lake Malone State Park partnered with the Kentucky State Parks Foundation to organize a fundraising campaign to raise $267,000 for the new dock.

In February 2017, an initial donation of $200,000 from the Felix E. Martin Jr. Foundation kicked off the fundraising campaign. Since that time, an additional $67,000 has been received from over 80 local donors including individuals, businesses and local government organizations. Funding has been used to purchase and install a handicap-accessible dock, including an upgraded gas pump which will provide fuel for residents and visitors to Lake Malone.

Gary Jones, Director of the Muhlenberg Alliance for Progress, said, “It took a lot of area residents from Lake Malone all the way to Frankfort, Kentucky to make this incredible project come to fruition in just four short months. The Lake Malone dock project shows what can happen when local communities, government officials and private entities come to gather to pool their resources and ideas. This project is a shining example for the rest of the state of what can happen when everyone gets on the same page for a common cause.”

After the ribbon cutting, the boat dock store and beach concession stand at Lake Malone State Park will be open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through Labor Day weekend. The store will sell gas, ice and assorted snacks. Fuel will also be available at other times by calling a number provided on the gas pump.

“I’d like to thank the Felix E. Martin Jr. Foundation, the park friends group, and our community for making this happen,” said Lake Malone State Park manager Teresa Wells. “This is a great improvement for the state park and the lake.”

Daily and monthly slip rentals will be available on the new boat dock subject to availability. For more information about slip rentals or services at Lake Malone State Park, call the Park office at (270) 657-2111.
