chad hawkesMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (7/21/17) — A Central City man led several police officers on a chase that spanned parts of Central City, South Carrollton side streets, a bean field in Moorman and finally into a wooded area, where he was located by a K-9 Unit and taken into custody.

Muhlenberg County Sheriff’s Deputy Jakop Smith said the pursuit began when Central City Policeman Chris Cummings was alerted about a dark blue van that might be in the area. Authorities believed the driver to be Timothy Chad Hawks, 45, who was wanted on several warrants.

Cummings saw the van around 9:30 p.m. on U.S. 431 North near South Carrollton. He followed the van as it turned onto North Second Street in Central City, where it then accelerated turning into the Jane’s Burger Shack parking lot.

Cummings activated his emergency equipment as the van continued onto U.S. 431 North and entered several side streets in South Carrollton before returning to U.S. 431 North heading toward Moorman. The vehicle made a right turn onto Moorman Cemetery Road, where Muhlenberg County Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Terry Vick took over the pursuit.

Vick, Deputy Will Ward and Deputy Pat Putnam followed the van around a bean field toward a wooded area, where they observed Hawks exit the van and flee into the woods on foot. Several deputies and Kentucky State Police attempted to locate Hawks in the woods, however, he continued to elude them until Ward deployed his K-9 partner, Zen, to assist in locating Hawks.

Police say Zen alerted them to Hawks’s location and although he continued to disregard their commands, he eventually was taken into custody. Police found a clear bag of marijuana and Oxycontin, a straw pipe with some type of residue and a large Bowie knife.

Hawks was transported to Muhlenberg County Detention Center and charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police/motor vehicle, first-degree wanton endangerment/police officer, second-degree fleeing or evading police/foot, reckless driving, three counts of disregarding a stop sign, driving on a DUI suspended license – with aggravated circumstance – second offense, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree possession of a controlled substance/drug unspecified, two Muhlenberg County warrants, a Daviess County arrest warrant and a Tennessee warrant.

Sheriff Curtis McGehee, Smith and Deputy Scott Bivins, Trooper Curtis Crick, Trooper Rob Austin and Trooper Daniel Holland assisted in the incident.
