wc vet ctr 300HANSON, Ky. (5/24/13) – On Friday, May 24, 2013, the Joseph “Eddie” Ballard Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson held a Memorial Day service honoring their fellow residents, family members, friends and all those who served in the United States Military.
 
Brother Gerald Phelps led the service with a prayer.
 
Guest speaker, Richard Stanley, Director Kentucky Veterans Cemetery expressed, “I want to thank everyone for letting me come out today to share the Memorial Day service. As you can understand, working at the Veterans Cemetery, we do that every day. We work with families who have lost loved ones. I know losing a loved one is hard and can take a while to recover from. To be able to celebrate their life, their service to our country on a day like this, is part of the healing process.”
 
Some of the veterans graciously volunteered to read poems that best represent what Memorial Day means to them and what they encountered when they were serving our country. Judith Lamb sang a beautiful song that brought tears to the audience’s eyes.
 
The veterans had a chance to tell everyone who they were, when and where they served and what the definition, to them, what Memorial Day means. There were also video and memorial presentations of those friends and family who have passed on in the past year.
 
The Hopkins County Central Air Force ROTC Cadets volunteered their time to close the service with Taps.
 
In three days, our country will be remembering those who served our country and now are resting in eternal sleep. On that day, we will raise our flags, listen to speeches and forever remember their services to our country and how they have fought for our freedom.
