Free Lunches for OPS Elementary, Middle School Students Starting in the Fall

school lunch 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/24/13) – Owensboro Public Schools students in elementary and middle school grade levels will have the opportunity to eat lunch for free, following OPS Board of Education approval of the idea at its regular meeting Thursday night.

The Community Eligibility Option is the newest option available for allowing schools with high percentages of low-income children to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students. The board approved the eligibility option to be provided specifically through the eighth grade in the Owensboro Independent School District. School board members told SurfKY that there is interest in adding the high school to the program, but that because it would require OHS to follow Title 1 program guidelines, it was decided the idea isn’t feasible at this time.

In other business, OHS guidance counselor Jane Prince and school board member John Blaney presented the awards of recognition to the 2013 Regional Academic All Stars. Emily Davis, who has plans to major in Music Education at Kentucky Wesleyan College, was recognized in the Arts category. Dutch Dohrenwend, who will major in Engineering at the University of Michigan, was recognized was recognized for outstanding performance in Math. Jeff Keeley, who wishes to attend the University of Louisville, was recognized as an academic all-star in Science. Finally, Philip Lanz, the awardee in the area of Social Studies, will continue on to study Political Science at the University of Kentucky. Also recognized Thursday were OHS students Emma McFarland, Lydia Kaminski, and Chandler Thompson for their participation in the Academic All-Stars program.

Henderson County High School Principal and SACS board member Sally Suggs was present Thursday to present to the school board an award from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in recognition of Owensboro High School’s 100 years of Accreditation. Suggs commended the Board of Education for their support of Owensboro High School, and stated, “We hope that your continued support will help Owensboro High School grow, prosper, and provide meaningful experiences for all of your high school students.

Director of Pupil Personnel presented the School Districts’ Bus Driver of the Year Award to bus driver Rex McHehee, an employee of the school district in that capacity for two years. The Award is presented to a recipient who is elected by the districts’ bus driving staff. According to Johnson, “When we started this program, we were afraid that it might be that the most popular person was picked over a person who truly deserved the award, but that has not been the case. We are proud to present this to the person who truly deserves it.”

Larry Vick presented David Johnson, Owensboro Public Schools’ Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel, Maintenance and Transportation, with the 2013 Kentucky Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP) of the Year Award. Officially, Johnson will not be given the award until the Kentucky Directors of Pupil Personnel (KDPP) Fall Institute that will be held Sept. 12-14 in Lexington. However, according to Dr. Vick, the school district had received permission to recognize Mr. Johnson for the award at Thursday’s board meeting.

All items on the board’s business agenda were approved.
