oboro catholicaces football03OWENSBORO, Ky. (7/28/14) — After outlasting Union County 27-26 en route to capturing the Class 2A, District 2 title, Owensboro Catholic is set to take the field with new starting quarterback Ray Zuberer calling the signals.

In limited action at the signal-caller position in 2013, Zuberer completed eight of 13 passes. Now a junior, Zuberer will direct an offensive unit for an Owensboro Catholic team that scored 439 points in a dozen games last season.

Owensboro Catholic (9-3) is the frontrunner in Class 2A, District 2, which also features Union County (9-3), Butler County (7-4), McLean County (4-6), Hancock County (2-9) and Todd County Central (0-10).

Zuberer has some big shoes to fill in the Owensboro Catholic lineup.

The Aces lost accomplished quarterback Houston Hartz to graduation. In 12 games last season, Hartz completed 322 of 529 passes for 3,664 yards and 43 touchdowns.

Leading rusher Jonathan Garner (812 yards, eight touchdowns) is back for the Aces.

Jansen Riney and Matt Norcia are the top receivers back for Owensboro Catholic.

Running back Holden Staples is expected to help to pace the Aces on the ground.

Defensively, Owensboro Catholic returns linebacker Devereaux Reed, one of the state's top defensive players.

Murray ended Owensboro Catholic's season in 2013, defeating the Aces 30-27 in the second round of the Class 2A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.

After compiling an 8-2 regular-season record, John Edge-coached Owensboro Catholic dismantled Crittenden County 50-7 in the opening round of the Class 2A State Playoffs.

The Aces will kick off the 2014 season at Apollo on Aug. 22. Kickoff for the Owensboro Catholic-Apollo game is set for 7 p.m.
