Tips Offered on Winter Weather Preparedness

snowy road 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (1/3/2014)— The wintery weather that hit across the state today can bring a variety of risks, but being prepared can help residents stay safe in the snow.

Dress in layers rather than relying on one thick garment. Thin layers insulate well and can be added or removed as the weather changes throughout the day. Make sure your outer layer is water-resistant or water-proof so you — and all your under layers — stay dry.

Keeping extremities warm will help prevent hypothermia. Mittens keep hands warmer than gloves and wool or fleece socks are best for protecting feet. Wear a warm hat that covers your ears.

Make sure to have emergency supplies on hand at all times so restocking isn't required during a storm. Emergency supplies should include extra medication, pet and baby supplies, a three-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day), a three-day supply of non-perishable food, a first aid kid and a multi-purpose tool.

If possible, every home should be equipped with a heating method that does not rely on gas or electricity. A fireplace or wood- or coal-burning stove are good options.

If driving is a must during severe weather, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes a first aid kit, non-perishable food, a windshield scraper and brush, booster cables, a flashlight, extra clothing and/or blankets and a tow rope. Hand and foot warmers are also excellent ideas.

Anyone stranded in a vehicle should turn on the motor for 10 minutes each hour and turn on the heat. Anyone staying in a vehicle with the engine running for an extended period of time, shouldcrack the window occasionally to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
