Owensboro Seal 02 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (2/8/14) - Taxicabs in Owensboro will now have to comply to cleanliness and operations standards, according to an ordinance passed Tuesday night by the Owensboro Board of Commissioners.

The ordinance, first introduced to the commission Dec. 17, states that the city has the exclusive power to “prescribe the qualifications and experience of drivers of taxicabs operating within the City“. The City will designate standards for all taxicab companies and drivers operating within Owensboro and includes establishing standards for permits, rates, and insurance. The City also says that penalties for failing to comply to the standards will also be instated.

The ordinance is to ensure a pleasant experience when visitors come to town after the opening of the Owensboro Convention Center in January, explained Mayor Ron Payne. Taxi cab operators will have a grace period to comply to the standards through March, according to the ordinance.
