Project Lead the Way Takes Part in Toyota Exhibit

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/21/13) – Students representing Madisonville North Hopkins High School’s Project Lead the Way pre-engineering program have been invited by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky to display their work at an exhibit at the Kentucky State Fair on Saturday.

“We are one of five schools that are sharing an exhibit with Toyota,” said MNHHS Project Lead the Way teacher Eddie Milum. “We are grateful to represent western Kentucky.”

As part of the exhibit, students will display a robot they have designed.

“The goal is to climb over a 2-inch barricade, collect a ball and bring it back,” said student Coleton Poole. “The more balls you get, the more points you get.” It is being designed for the National VEX Ro-botics Competition.

Other students who will be attending are Jacob Moore, Kambree Prelow and Sheyanne Harris.

“It’s a great chance for these kids to rub elbows with some Toyota corporate people,” Milum said.

The exhibit will include a model of how the robot can move and the basic design concepts.

The display will also feature a design of an innovative syringe with a rubber gasket and tube that allows all liquid medication to be moved from a bottle. Students in the Engineering Development and Design class will be going through the patent process for this invention.

Fair-goers can also see a project from the Digital Electronics class that incorporated use of the Minecraft game to let students develop circuits through that game.

The purpose of Toyota’s exhibit is to show support for Project Lead the Way.

“They actually hire students who have been Project Lead the Way students,” Milum said.
