The Lex Flu Crew Offers Free Flu Shots at Free Flu Friday

lex flu crewLEXINGTON, Ky. (9/10/13)— An annual chance to get a free flu shot is returning to Lexington this October.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department and its Lex Flu Crew will host Free Flu Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Imani Family Life Center, 1555 Georgetown Road. This special one-day clinic is designed to give up to 2,000 free flu shots to residents and help the health department test its emergency preparedness.

 “Getting an annual flu shot is the easiest and best way to fight the flu each fall and winter,” said Kevin Hall, LFCHD spokesman. “Free Flu Friday allows the people of Lexington to protect themselves and their families, as well as help us test our abilities to give a large amount of shots in a small amount of time.”

To help speed the time in line – generally no longer than 20-30 minutes – advance registration forms can be printed ahead of time. “Just go to www.LexFluCrew.com, print the form, fill it out and bring it with you Oct. 11. Our staff will help get you in the door and out with a free flu shot as quickly as possible,” Hall said.

The seasonal flu shot, which also provides protection against H1N1, is recommended to all people ages 6 months and older. Last year, Lexington had 343 confirmed cases of the flu. The health department provided more than 3,300 flu vaccinations throughout the season.

Last year, the health department provided almost 1,700 free shots at Free Flu Friday.

For community members not able to get their flu shots on Oct. 11, the health department offers flu shots 1-4 p.m. every Monday-Thursday at its Public Health Clinic North at 805A Newtown Circle. No appointment is necessary, and the cost for a flu shot is $25. Medicaid/Medicare, cash, checks, credit cards and some insurances are accepted.

The health department will also use Free Flu Friday to collect non-perishable food items for God’s Pantry. Soups, ready-made meals and canned meats are particularly of note during the fall season, but any non-perishable items will be accepted for God’s Pantry.
