OPS Board of Education Proposes New Career and Technical Center Project

Board of Education General 06 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/27/13) - Nick Brake, Superintendent of the Owensboro Public Schools made a presentation to the Board of Education at Thursday night’s meeting concerning the proposal of The Greater Owensboro Career and Technical Center.

The new project would implement the Community Campus Program connecting Owensboro High School and surrounding high school students to business, medical, industrial, and technical leaders in the community.

“Business and community partners are key,” said Brake.

It will also partner with the program Project Lead the Way, already in several OPS schools. The program provides rigorous and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to curriculum in middle and high schools, according to its website.

The technical and career center will have Science, Technology, and Engineering academies and will also have opportunities for students to work in labs, on construction and welding projects, and be taught business and entrepreneurship lessons.

Currently, there are no schools like this in the state of Kentucky, but the board recognized that the state is behind it 100 percent. There will be no GPA requirement for students, and the program will not be income-based. The school will “serve middle of the road students” needing more attention in the classroom, according to Board Chair Nancy Eskridge.

The project is still in its first stages and Superintendent Brake isn’t sure about the timeline of the new center, but said it “could be next fall.”

The next OPS Board of Education Meeting is scheduled for October 24 at 4:30 p.m.
