loan oak 300PADUCAH, Ky. (10/4/13) – The Rotary Club of Paducah provided a dictionary to each of the 878 third grade students attending the 11 Paducah/McCracken County public and private elementary schools, including CCA, Clark, Concord, Farley, Heath, Hendron/Lone Oak, Lone Oak, McNabb, Morgan, Reidland, and St. Mary. This represents one way the service organization partners with the School Districts to positively influence the literacy level and quality of life of children in our community.

Reading levels are more likely to predict future income than socioeconomic status at birth, and the Rotary Club of Paducah is doing what it can to increase reading levels of students across Paducah and McCracken County.

Melanie McNeill and Steve Bright co-chair the project and worked with the schools to assure all third grade students were included and then coordinated delivery to match the needs of each school. A name plate containing Rotary’s Four-Way Test was placed inside each dictionary by club members and read: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?” They were introduced to the Four-Way Test as a positive way to make decisions.

More than 20 club members then personally delivered the dictionaries to every third grade classroom in the county, leading the students in discovering the variety of information the dictionary offers. Students looked up words and were surprised to find other interesting facts such as the capital of each state and the longest word.

“We are grateful to the Rotary Club of Paducah for sharing our life-long love of reading. Placing a book in a child’s hands creates a sense of pride and curiosity that electronic methods simply cannot touch,” stated Steve Ybarzabal, principal of Clark Elementary.

Chris McNeill, President of the Paducah Rotary Club, said, “Our club enthusiastically focuses on promoting education in our community from providing dictionaries to third graders all the way to our leadership in the Community Scholarship Program, which provides two full years of college to local students.
