WKU SGA Leaders to Meet with Congressional Delegation

wku logo grayblackLEXINGTON, Ky. (7/31/13) – Western Kentucky University’s top two student body leaders, Keyana Boka and Mark Reeves, will visit Washington, D.C., this week with student leaders from across the state.
 
The trip will take place from Wednesday to Saturday (July 31-Aug. 3). Boka serves as SGA President and Reeves is the organization’s Executive Vice President.
 
They will be joined by students from the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville and Eastern Kentucky University. The trip is part of the KY in DC program, which aims to bring the Kentucky public schools of higher education to the United States Congress in a face-to-face interaction between student and national leaders.
 
The student leaders are set to meet with members of Kentucky’s congressional delegation including Rep. Andy Barr, Rep. Brett Guthrie, Rep. Thomas Massie, Rep. Hal Rogers, Rep. John Yarmuth and Sen. Mitch McConnell.
 
The students plan to discuss several issues with the legislators including renewing Pell grants, student loan interest rates, student financial aid and the impact of sequestration cuts to the National Institutes of Health and medical research.
 
“KY in D.C. is a great program we're starting, and I’m looking forward the much-needed discussions with lawmakers about the poor state of higher education funding,” Boka said.
