Authorities Confirm Nine Dead in Muhlenberg House Fire

Depoy fire 300DEPOY, Ky. (1/30/14) — Authorities have confirmed that an early morning fire has claimed the lives of nine members of one family in Muhlenberg County.

As previously reported, six people had been found dead as a result of the fire and three were missing.

Two had been flown to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

Authorities confirmed during a 1 p.m. press conference on the scene, that the three missing have been found to also have perished in the blaze. The house is located at 3724 Motes Lane, Depoy, which is about 3.5 miles west of Greenville.

Out of the 11 members of the family that lived in the house, it is now known that the two that were flown to Nashville are the father and a daughter.

The father Chad Watson, 36, is listed in critical but stable condition and daughter, Kylie, 11, is listed in stable condition.

The victims include the mother, Larae Watson, 35; Madison Watson, 15; Kaitlyn, 14; Morgan, 13; Emily 9; Samuel, 8; Raegan Watson, 6; and, twins Mark and Nathaniel, 4.

Eight of the 11 family members were located in the front of the room in what is believed the master bedroom. The ninth was located approximately 10 to 15 feet away from them.

According to Kentucky State Police spokesman Stu Recke, it is still too early to determine the cause of the fire, but for now, foul play is not suspected.

Recke said the fire was called into Muhlenberg Central Dispatch at 2:01 a.m. by a neighbor, who saw the house ablaze.

“The first responders reported that the house was fully engulfed upon arrival,” Recke told SurfKY. “We do know that there was a family of 11 living in the residence ― two parents and nine children.”

Kentucky State Police is the lead investigating agency.

The Kentucky State Fire Marshal and the Muhlenberg County Coroner's Office are assisting KSP.

Other agencies assisting on the scene include the Greenville, Central City, Beechmont and Graham fire departments along with Muhlenberg EMS, Greenville Police, American Red Cross, the Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Department and Hawesville Fire Department Canine Team.
