WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (8/28/13) - For years Glenn Hobgood, a Sebree native, was known for performing a comedy act under the name “Bubba Sonders.” The stage name is gone now, but Hobgood is still traveling the county and performing both on stage and on screen.
“People started calling me ‘Bubba’ when I started to get fat,” Hobgood said. “After losing the weight I’ve tried to reinvent myself and started working under my own name.”
Today Hobgood lives in New Orleans, where he spreads his time between working as an actor, a hypnotist, a stand-up comedian and a motivational speaker.
He appears in an upcoming film called “Bayou Tales” in which he plays a small role of a guest in a haunted hotel. The film was filmed near his home in Louisiana.
Other acting roles include the role of Naked Guy in “The Campaign” with Will Ferrell and commercials including a series of bank ads with Eli Manning which will be released during the 2014 NFL football season.
The role he is the most excited about is that of a character in a movie called “Sand Castles” that is scheduled to be released in early 2014.
“It’s going to be entered in Sundance, and we hope to get picked up for nationwide distribution,” Hobgood said.
The film focuses on a family that has been destroyed by the kidnapping of their 5-year-old daughter. 12 years later the missing girl returns just as mysteriously as she vanished.
“Before she shows up, the family has fallen apart,” Hobgood said. “I play a pillar of the community, the owner of the local bookstore. Every year I put on the play Great Expectations.”
Among the cast of the movie is Clint Howard, the brother of child actor turned director Ron Howard.
Hobgood said that in the last month he has audienced for roles in 22 Jump Street, the sequel to the 2012 hit starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.
He also recently starred in a short film about the fall of Newburgh, IN during the Civil War.
But it is stand-up comedy that Hobgood is most known for. Over the past 20 years Glen has performed at hundreds of small venues across the United States, as well as comedy clubs that include Crackers, The Funny Bone, Zanies and the Improv. He has worked with Richard Belzer, Billy Gardell, Rodney Carrington, Bobcat Goldwaith, Dave Attell and many more. Hobgood’s shows talk about growing old, family and live, a favorite with all audiences.
For those who would like to learn more about Glen Hobgood, he will be performing three shows in the tri-state area this week. Thursday, Aug. 29th you can see Hobgood perform his comedy hypnosis show at the Green Dragon Tavern at Crowded House in Madisonville. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
On Friday, Aug. 30th and Saturday, Aug. 31st he will be performing stand-up at The Joke Factory in Evansville, In.
