Joseph 'Randell ' Whittaker, 78, of Owensboro, Ky

obit3OWENSBORO, Ky. - Joseph 'Randell ' Whittaker, 78, of Owensboro, Ky passed away Monday, September 2, 2013 at Twin Rivers Nursing Home. He was born November 15, 1934 in Owensboro to the late Manual Carl Whittaker, Sr. and Bessie Lou Howard Whittaker. He retired as the Auto Parts Manager for Gipe Automotive and was a US Navy Korean War veteran. He was a member of Eaton Memorial Baptists Church and enjoyed carpentry, working on cars, Dallas Cowboys football and UK Basketball.

He was a desk clerk at the Rudd Hotel and joined Navy in 1952 and was discharged in 1955. He took boot camp in San Diego, CA. and went aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS WASP CVA-18 in March of 1953 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

He went on two cruises, Guantanamo Bay and toured around the world. He crossed the Arctic Circle, went through the Suez Canal and stopped off in Naples, Italy. He also went to Sri Lanka and Hong Kong, China. His cruises also took him to the Manilla in the Philippines, Yokosuka, Japan and Hawaii, finishing up in San Francisco, CA.

Aside from his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, June Muriel Whittaker (1992), two brothers, Manuel Carl Whittaker, Jr. and Ronald Louis Whittaker.

Surviving are his children, Randy R (Kristi) Whittaker, Candy Whittaker (Jim) Beaven, Shelly (Stacy) Whittaker, Nick Whittaker, al of Owensboro, grandchildren, Amanda Zimmerman, Chad Lillpop, Landon Prather, Eric Whittaker, Morgan Whittaker, Wil Whittaker, Nolan Whittaker, a sister, Patricia Shipley of Evansville, IN, a half brother, Tommy Goode of Tucson, AZ and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home with Mark Poiles officiating and burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western KY, 3419 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301
