He was preceded in death by his father John Simeon Mulligan Sr. and his mother Mary Christine Edge Mulligan, for whom he cared in their later years.
A farmer by trade, Vernon enjoyed the outdoors and took a keen interest in the natural history of the area. He was an avid reader and had an appetite for learning. A down-to-earth man who lived a simple, hardworking life, he exhibited keen insight into matters of the world. He was a kind and gentle soul who won the respect and affection of all who knew him.
Vernon leaves behind four brothers and two sisters, Yvonne Mulligan Hileman (David), of Louisville; Thomas Carl Mulligan of Beech Grove, John S. Mulligan, Jr., Md. (Cindy), of Philpot, Hugh M. Mulligan of Frankfort, Timothy J. Mulligan of West Louisville, and Katie Mulligan Polston (Dale) of Owensboro. He also is survived by nieces and nephews, Jeffrey Lynn Hayden, Jr. (Amanda) of Indianapolis, Kimberly A. Mulligan of Columbus, Ohio, John A. Mulligan of Lexington, Ky. and Zachary Riddle of Frankfort, Ky.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 5, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Sorgho, Ky. with Father Richard Powers officiating. Visitation is on Friday, July 4, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, July 5, from 10:00 to 12:15 p.m., at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home, Owensboro, Ky. Prayers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery in Sorgho, Ky.
