ben waide 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/30/14) — Kentucky State Rep. Ben Waide has responded to yesterday's indictment handed down by a Franklin Circuit Court Grand Jury yesterday.

Waide spoke with SurfKY News today, July 30 regarding the allegations he violated campaign finance laws, and asked that his Facebook comment to his friends be used as his statement to the pubic.

"Thanks to so many for your prayers and support during this difficult time! I strongly maintain my innocence! I will work with my attorneys to vigorously defend myself from these attacks, which appear to be politically motivated! God Bless and please continue to pray," wrote Waide.

Waide is the Republican candidate for the Nov. 4 General Election running for the position of Hopkins County Judge-Executive.

Original story:

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/29/14) — State Rep. Ben Waide, 51, Madisonville, has been indicted by a Franklin County Grand Jury, which returned a two-count felony indictment charging Waide with violations of campaign finance laws.

According to a Kentucky Attorney General's Office, Waide was charged with knowingly accepting contributions from a corporation in violation of KRS 121.150 (20) and causing funds in his campaign account to be expended for purposes that were not allowable campaign expenditures in violation of KRS 121.175.

The charges relate to Waide's 2010 campaign for state representative and are the result of an investigation conducted by Attorney General Jack Conway's Department of Criminal Investigations. The complaint was filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance by shareholders of Liberty Rehabilitation. Waide was alleged to have illegally accepted approximately $10,000 in campaign contributions from Liberty Rehabilitation, where he was a partner. He is also alleged to have submitted approximately $6,000 in receipts to his campaign fund for reimbursement of expenses he did not incur.

Waide is scheduled for arraignment at 9 a.m. Aug. 29 in Franklin Circuit Court.

The charge against Waide are Class D felonies and each carries a penalty of one to five years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
