Wende Laine Stone Bell

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Wende Laine Stone Bell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, born April 26, 1957 in Lake Forest, Illinois, passed away peacefully on May 9th at home surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her mother Elaine Nelson Stone and her grandparents Nels and Elsa Nelson and W. Owings and Margaret Stone.

Wende was raised in Potomac, Maryland and graduated from the Holton-Arms School. At Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia, she stupassed away abroad in Florence, Italy and received a degree in Art History. On a summer vacation with her family to the Keeneland July Sales, she met and fell in love with a young KY horseman, Jimmy Bell. They married in 1979 shortly after her graduation from Hollins, and Lexington became her home. While raising her three children, she spent countless hours volunteering with numerous school and community activities. Later, she continued her love for design and fashion through many interior design projects and a successful career as a fashion consultant with the Carlisle Collection.

Wende Bell was on the Boards and active in many charities and organizations, including Baby Health, Lexington Cancer Foundation, Horses for Hope, and Idle Hour Country Club.

Family and friends were Wende’s passion and delight. She brought joy and enthusiasm to each and every endeavor. An avid sports enthusiast, Wende was a devoted University of KY Wildcat fan in addition to her pursuit of golf. Her wonderful spirit and hospitable personality provided a bright light to everything she did, including making beautiful homes and gardens, but her strongest passion was for family and friends.

In addition to her husband of 34 years, James Gatewood Bell, Wende “Happy” Bell is survived by her three children: James Gatewood Bell, Jr. (Lauren); Tyler Bell Jones (Bret); Shelby Bell Gressett (Drew); five grandchildren, Eloise Stone Bell; Daisy Williams Bell; James Brereton Jones; Lucy Bell Gressett; Laine Christian Gressett; a sister Hilary Stone Carroll (Chris); a niece Anderson Taylor Carroll; and father Thomas Edwin Stone.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Baby Health Services, 1590 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, Ky. 40504. Friends may call at her home on Tuesday, May 14th from 4 – 8 p.m. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15th at Christ Church Cathedral, 166 Market Street in Lexington, followed by burial at Lexington Cemetery. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
