Thomas Vincent Getchell, 73

obit1LEXINGTON, Ky. -  Thomas Vincent Getchell, 73, husband of Marilyn Levisohn Getchell, passed peacefully in his sleep, Sat, July 20, 2013. Born in Erie, PA, he was the son of the late Vincent John and Katherine Kensill Getchell. Tom was a professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Ky College of Medicine. A true scholar, Dr. Getchell received his B.S. degree from Gannon College, his M.S. degree from Villanova University, and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. In his faculty positions at University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, Wayne State University, and UK, he trained many graduate and post-doctoral students and received numerous awards for his research in neuroscience. He also served as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School at Wayne State University and Associate Dean for Research and Basic Science at the UK College of Medicine. Letters penned by his great-grandfather during the Civil War inspired his interest in genealogy and the publication of Orrin’s Story: Patriotism & Love of Country. The Union, Now and Forever. Based on his genealogical research, he had recently become a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. His interest in mentoring college students and the fine arts resulted in his taking a leadership position with the Lexington Opera Society. He loved and was loved by his family.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, he is survived by his sons, Aaron (Shelley) Getchell, Tampa, FL and Abraham (fiancé Morgan Wickline) Getchell, Lexington; and grandchildren Madelyn and Charlotte Getchell. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Twaroski.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Wed at Cathedral of Christ the King. Burial will follow at the Lexington Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Aaron Getchell, Abraham Getchell, Emery Wilson, Sal Nalli, David Wekstein and Mark Denno. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Tues at Milward-Southland. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catholic Social Services, the Lexington Opera Society (PO Box 8463, Lexington 40533), the University of Ky College of Medicine, or Cathedral of Christ the King.
