LEXINGTON, Ky. - John Williams Bicknell, 78, passed away on October 27th, 2013 in Houston, Texas. He was born February 25th, 1935 in Lexington, Ky where he grew up. He was the son of Lutie Hamilton (Williams) and Dwight Lyman Bicknell. He was a graduate of the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He served four years on a Naval destroyer and departed active service as a lieutenant.
He married Mary Stanhope Duncan and they lived in Houston, Texas where he worked in the petro-chemical industry for Signal Oil and Gas Company, Tenneco Oil Company, PetroTex, and Itochu Corporation. He was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, the Forest Club, Idle Hour Country Club, Burlingame Country Club, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the National Petroleum Refining Association. He also volunteered in the AARP Tax Aid program.
He was a devoted husband and father. He is predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Ann Bicknell of Lexington, Ky. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, of 49 years and two sons. John Williams Bicknell, Jr and wife, Mary, are from Lake Oswego, Oregon and have two daughters, Marilyn Grace and Felicity River. Douglas Belfield Bicknell and wife, Tammy, are from Kingwood, Texas and have three daughters, Elizabeth Antoinette, Josephine Frances, and Kathryn Mary.
Friends may visit the family at Milward-Broadway, 159 N. Broadway, Lexington, Ky on Wednesday October 30th, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. There will be a graveside service at Lexington Cemetery on Thursday, October 31st, 2013 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, The Duncan-Bicknell Trust (the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, P.O. Box 1888 Asheville, NC 28802), or the charity of your choice.
