Thomas Earl Lane, 69, of Paducah, KY

PADUCAH, Ky. - Thomas Earl Lane, 69, of Paducah, KY passed away at 3:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at his residence. Mr. Lane was a graduate of Crittenden County High School and Murray State University. He served in the United States Air Force from 1967 till 1971. Mr. Lane was ever the teacher, always educating with everyone he encountered. Following this, he spent most of his working career at Heath High School where he began as a biology teacher in 1972. In 1978 he became Assistant Principal and Principal in 1985. Throughout his tenure at Heath he used his passion to guide the faculty and students and make Heath one of the most successful schools in the State all the while developing and shaping many young men and women to be successful parents, community leaders, and professionals. After leaving Heath in 1992, he served as Director of Transportation, Buildings and Grounds for McCracken County School’s until retiring in 1995. After his retirement and true to his form, he could not 'stay retired' and went back to teaching science part time at Heath Middle School then at Community Christian Academy.

In the mid 1980’s Mr. Lane became involved in the Boy Scouts of America when his son, Sean, started in Cub Scouts. As Sean advanced through Scouts, so did Tom. Tom held several leadership positions within Troop 4 and the District and stayed active even after his son had moved on. In many ways, the Boy Scouts was Tom’s second career and allowed him to live out his passion for teaching after retirement. Once he retired he began to increase his involvement with the Boy scouts and continued to mentor and develop boys, transforming them in honorable young men.

As well as the Boy Scouts, Mr. Lane became involved in the Concord Lions Club sponsor organization for Troop 4 after retirement and held various leadership positions. He was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church and the Grahamville Masonic Lodge #707 F&AM.

Mr. Lane was preceded in death by his parents, Kathleen and Earl Lane formerly of Marion, KY.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara Stigall Lane and children, April Lane Dunn (Tom), Sean Lane (Heather) and Kristi Lane Rehrauer(Scott) and 'adopted' daughter Rebecca Williams Arnold. He is survived by a tribe of grandchildren; Sam Dunn, Mattie Dunn, Evan Rehrauer, Anna Lane, Nate Lane, Mary Rehrauer, Cecilia Lane, Hagan Lane and Henry Lane.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Rev. Jewell Barrett and Rev. Andy Shelton officiating. Graveside services with Military Honors will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Freedom Cemetery in Marion, KY.

Friends may call after 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah where Masonic Services will be held at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers and in tribute to Tom’s dedication to the Boy Scouts, the family asks that a donation be made to the Thomas E. Lane Scholarship Fund to provide camping opportunities to boys in scouting that are in financial need. Make checks payable to Troop 4 Thomas E. Lane Scholarship Fund and send to Troop 4 BSA, P.O. Box 220, West Paducah, KY 42086-0220.
