bee 1 300PADUCAH, KY (2/22/12) – Beekeeping will be the topic of a science seminar at West Kentucky Community and Technical College on February 29 beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Waller Hall, room 112.

Beekeeping, also known as apiculture, is the maintenance of honeybee colonies, commonly in hives, by humans. A beekeeper (apiarist) keeps bees in order to collect honey and other products of the hive such as beeswax, pollen and royal jelly or to also produce bees for sale to other beekeepers.

During the one-hour seminar, Dr. Kathryn Broadbent, a part-time chemistry professor at WKCTC and beekeeping enthusiast, will discuss the art of beekeeping including honeybee behavior, the proper way to keep bees, create an apiary or “bee yard” and more.

Dr. Broadbent attended Centre College of Kentucky where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. She also earneda doctorate degree in biochemistry from the University of Louisville.

The public is invited to attend the free seminar.
