Nerves were high heading into the 7:30 game Tuesday night. Both teams had great seasons, but for one of them, the season was coming to an end. Owensboro Catholic jumped on the board early after a ball slipped through the legs of Daviess County’s goalie 30 seconds into the game. Daviess County answered back around 19 minutes to play in the first half. The game would be tied going into halftime 1 – 1.
After halftime, the pace picked up quite a bit. With 23:10 minutes left in the game, Catholic scored again, as they lobbed a shot over the DC goalie’s head. In the final two minutes of play, Daviess County had plenty of opportunities to score with three corner kicks. But Catholics’ defense held up, and the Aces won the game 2 – 1.
After the game Aces Girls’ Head Soccer Coach Durand Engineer said keeping up the energy level was tough to do as the game progressed.
“We executed to perfection,” Engineer said. “We were tired in the second half and made some mistakes, but we kept pushing through.”
Looking forward to the district championship game against Owensboro, Engineer called Owensboro a “speedy, crafty team.”
“We have to come out focused and stay organized to win,” Engineer said.
Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic will meet in the 9th district championship game Thursday night at Deer Park Elementary. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
