OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/18/13) – The Owensboro Catholic Girl’s Soccer team received the 9th district title Thursday night after coming up short many times. The Aces were not going to be denied, winning a 1 – 0 thriller against the Owensboro Red Devils.
The game remained scoreless until Owensboro Catholic’s Sarah Haleman kicked a goal with 5:22 left in the first half. The score at halftime was 1 – 0 after Owensboro and the Aces had opportunities to score late.
In the second half, Catholic constantly pushed the tempo. The Red Devils goalie, Kayli Webb, showed great determination stopping the Aces, which kept the Devils in the game. Owensboro fought hard all night but couldn’t hold onto the ball to get good shots. The Aces prevailed in the game winning 1 – 0.
After the game, Owensboro Catholics Girl’s Soccer Coach Durand Engineer pointed out to SurfKY News, his team’s passion, drive, and determination made the difference in the game.
“We passed the ball very well and created a lot of opportunities for ourselves by generating pressure,” Engineer said.
Engineer is looking forward to the Region games next week in Muhlenberg.
“We must improve from this performance, the final third must improve if we are going to win region.” Engineer said.
