CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After a scoreless first half, Charlotte took advantage of an own goal from the Kentucky men's soccer team to post a 1-0 win, on a pleasant Saturday night at Transamerica Field.
Kentucky (4-7-1, 1-2-1 Conference USA) and the 49ers battled through the first 45 minutes in a scoreless game. In the 47th minute, a UK defender tried to clear a ball by the near post, but his clearance sailed into the back of the net for an own goal and the game-winning tally for Charlotte.
UK sophomore goalkeeper Callum Irving had a dynamic game in goal, despite the own goal. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native finished with a career-high six saves, including four huge saves to keep UK within striking distance in the second half.
Charlotte (5-5-3, 1-3-2 C-USA) finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots and an 8-1 mark in corner kicks, marking just the second game that the Wildcats had been outshot and the first since Sept. 5 at East Tennessee State
UK will return to action on Wednesday, hosting No. 29 Tulsa at 7 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.

GAME NOTES: Freshman Charlie Reymann had his start streak snapped at 11 games ... Tyler Riggs and Isak Krogstad were UK's first subs of the game ... Charlotte now leads the series, 2-0 ... Senior defender Steven Perinovic won 8-of-11 contested header attempts in the game and has now won 97-of-122 contested header attempts in 2013 ... UK was outshot in the game for the first time since Sept. 5 and just the second time in 12 games ... UK lost the battle for corners for the first time in 2013.
