GREENVILLE, Ky. – Muhlenberg Mustang Bass Fishing Team's 2nd Annual Swap Meet will feature a boatload of prizes you might expect...plus a grand prize you might not have imagined-a fishing trip to Kentucky Lake with team coach, Cody Napier.
Napier told SurfKY News the idea for the grand prize came from Agriculture instructor, Scott Cronin. Cronin said, "We were just trying to come up with new ideas for helping to raise money to fund the team."
"We should have me host a guided fishing trip-for-one to Kentucky Lake. The value is around $300 and will be raffled off Saturday, Jan. 25, 7:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at West Campus," said Napier.
The great part about this prize, according to Napier, is that it gives him a chance to meet and spend time with new team supporters one-on-one.
"We can get out on Kentucky Lake, enjoy some good fishing, and I'll have a chance to tell the winner more about our bass fishing team, what our goals are, and hopefully build support in the community among people who may not be familiar with all of our team's activities," said Napier.
There will be a number of other great prizes, including an All Pro rod, valued at approximately $200.
Napier stressed that the swap meet, which is open to the public, is the major fund raiser to keep the team going through the season.
"Every team has its goals. Whether it's a football field, or a gymnasium for basketball. The main things we need are…money to buy gas to get to the meets throughout the season, fishing rods, equipment, bait, tackle, and hopefully within the next few years, team boats," said Napier.
At the present time, much of the equipment, assistance, and other items needed to keep one of the top teams in the state going, is donated by individuals. The 2012-2013 season was the first year for the team.
"We had a pretty good year, especially considering it was our first year to have a fishing team. It's something our county can be proud of," said Napier.
As for the many volunteers who stepped up to help in the first season, Napier had praise for them as well.
"We are proud and happy to have people from throughout the county who are ready and willing to sacrifice a weekend with their family, to come out and help us make it to events. Many even supply boats and other items we might need," said Napier.
It will be a fisherman's delight, with a wide array of items to buy, swap and trade. "Vendors should be at the West Campus by 6 a.m. to allow time to be set up when the doors opens," said Napier.
- Admission for this weekend's meet is $5 for adults, and free for those 12 and under.
- Tables are still available for vendors at $15 per table, and $10 for each additional table.
