Welcome to Surfky's electric car vehicle index. Our database shows the total yearly sales of electric vehicles in the United States segmented by state. The data has been compiled using the most up-to-date information from government entities, nonprofit organizations, and private sources dedicated to tracking the sales and new registrations of EVs nationwide. Some of our sources include the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDT) and the California Energy Commission (CEC), among others.
In the year 2020, there were a total of 314,237 electric vehicles sold in the United States. That number decreased 1.18% from the previous year. The state with the highest number of electric vehicles sold in 2020 was California, with 146,951 sales, followed by New York with 15,086 units, and Florida with 13,125 total electric cars sold. In terms of growth, the states with the highest four-year growth rates were Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Mississippi, with 876.81%, 248.65% and 215.71%, respectively.
Despite the incredible growth in annual units sold, electric vehicles continue to be a tiny fraction of the overall U.S. auto market, representing only 1.85% of the total vehicles sold in 2020.
