ktc snow1 300WESTERN, Ky. (1/12/18) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 2 Snow and Ice Team reported early this morning 10 of 11 counties have trucks on the road spreading salt. Muhlenberg County was still reporting rain at 4:48 a.m. KYTC District 2 Crews hit the road at 3:00 a.m. as the freeze line continued to move eastward.

A few District 2 counties are plowing, KYTC Spokesman Keith Todd said. The Snow and Ice Team game plan is to try to get salt out so it helps prevent freezing on road surfaces as the rain transitions to freezing rain, a wintry mix, and then to snow.  Pavement temperatures were still above the freezing mark at most locations before 5 a.m.

KYTC crews are being supplemented with contract snow plows.

Ice is a game changer, Todd said. It makes it especially difficult to improve driving conditions and takes a lot more salt and a lot more effort to melt ice. That said, the wintry mix is transitioning from rain to sleet much more quickly than expected. While sleet still produces ice on roadways, less freezing rain reduces the likelihood of downed trees and power lines.

Along I-24 earlier this morning, Todd said roads were starting to get some slush accumulating between the tire tracks. I-24 message boards have been activated with messages indicating “Icing Conditions” and “Slow Down.”

Todd said drivers are asked to avoid unnecessary travel. As temperatures drop, it is expected to be increasingly difficult to improve driving conditions.
