mitch mcConnell 300WASHINGTON, D.C. (2/11/19) – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following video statement today addressing the Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors in support of Unit 3 at the Paradise Fossil Plant in Western Kentucky:

“Time and again, the people of Kentucky have loudly spoken in support of coal. I’m proud to join them today in opposing the closing of Paradise Unit 3.

“Coal is an affordable and reliable source of energy we can find right here in Kentucky. It powers the lights in our homes, it drives our small businesses, and it employs thousands of hardworking Kentuckians. Coal has helped fuel our country’s greatness, and it needs to be part of our energy future.

“Kentuckians strongly oppose moving away from coal, and I would hope that the TVA listens to our voices.

“In the Senate, I’ve championed efforts to end President Obama’s ‘War on Coal.’

We’ve passed legislation to end the Stream Buffer Rule and partnered with the Trump administration to overturn the Waters of the U.S. rule and the so-called Clean Power Plan.

“Today we’re making great strides to undo the previous administration’s hostility toward coal communities. Here in Paradise, the last remaining coal unit is too important to shutter, especially for the hundreds of jobs it supports both directly and indirectly. This unit’s full impact is felt far beyond the plant’s boundaries. The economy of this entire region is invested in its work and its future.

“I urge you to postpone this critical decision until this Board is at full strength with Senate-confirmed members. However, if a vote does occur this week, the Board should vote to continue operating this important coal unit.

“Thank you for the opportunity to speak in defense of Kentucky’s coal communities.”
