kystatepoliceimage 300UPDATE: HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (9/20/18) — The man in the officer-involved shooting earlier this week in Christian County has been identified via fingerprint records as Damon Christopher Gayheart, 44, of Owensboro, Kentucky State Police Post 2 reported.

The officer involved has been identified as Trooper Paul Hale, a three-year veteran of KSP, according to the report. Hale has been placed on administrative leave, pursuant with KSP policy.

The investigation is ongoing by the KSP Critical Incident Response Team.

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (9/17/18) — Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened overnight.

A pursuit involving an individual alleged to be in a stolen vehicle out of Akron, Ohio resulted in a trooper shooting the suspect after a series of events.

KSP Post 2 in Madisonville received a call requesting assistance at 12:24 a.m. from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office, KSP Post 2 Spokesman Trooper Rob Austin reported. The complaint involved a vehicle at the intersection of Meacham and Greenville roads. The driver was slumped over the steering wheel.
 
When CCSO and the trooper arrived on scene, they discovered the vehicle was stolen from Akron, Ohio, Post 2 reported. Upon contact, the person became uncooperative and the trooper attempted to remove the suspect from the vehicle.

“The suspect began to flee the scene, and in the process, the trooper was dragged by the vehicle until able to dislodge himself,” KSP wrote.
 
The deputies and trooper pursued the vehicle southbound along Greenville Road for several miles, according to the report. During the pursuit, the stolen vehicle caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.

“During the interaction at the end of the pursuit, the suspect was fatally shot by the trooper,” KSP reported.

The Christian County Coroner’s Office pronounced the unidentified person deceased at the scene.
 
KSP says they are working to identify the individual. 
 
Hopkinsville Police Department, Christian County EMS, Christian County Emergency Management Agency and Lacy Fire Department assisted.
