apollo eagles logo 2015OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/7/18) — Apollo is headed back to the Boys' Sweet 16. The Eagles defeated Owensboro Catholic 51-41 in the Third Region Boys' Basketball Tournament championship game at the Sportscenter on Tuesday night.

With the win, Apollo improved to 16-15 and advances to the state tournament.

Owensboro Catholic ended its season 23-10 with the loss.

The Eagles owned a lead at the conclusion of each quarter. Setting the tone early, Apollo outscored Owensboro Catholic 19-7 in the first quarter.

Apollo, under the direction of head coach Steve Barker, led 29-16 at halftime. The Eagles were limited to four points in the third period but managed to pull away for the 10-point victory in the final frame.

Hayden Shelton paced Apollo with 15 points. Three Apollo players reached double figures in the scoring column as Alex Gray added 13 points and James Graham posted 10 points.

Aiding the Apollo scoring attack, Angel Saldana and Nathan Boyle added eight points and five points, respectively.

Bailey Ballard led Owensboro Catholic with a game-high 18 points. Ballard was the only Owensboro Catholic player to reach double figures in the scoring column. Luke Hayden and JD Marshall narrowly missed reaching double figures for the Aces, finishing with nine points apiece.
