muhl mustangs1 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (3/13/18) — Reigning Third Region baseball champion Muhlenberg County is set to open the 2018 season on the road at Breckinridge County on Tuesday, March 20.

The Mustangs, under the direction of head coach Brad Rogles, outlasted Daviess County 5-4 in the 2017 Third Region title game.

Following the region triumph, Muhlenberg County edged 16th Region champion Rowan County 4-3 in nine innings in the opening round of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament before falling to Simon Kenton. The Mustangs ended the 2017 season 28-10 after Simon Kenton prevailed 3-2 in a second round game in the state tournament. Muhlenberg County outscored opponents 253-131 during the 2017 season.

A Third Region rival for the Mustangs, Breckinridge County compiled a 14-16 record in 2017. The Fighting Tigers finished runner-up to Meade County in the 11th District. Then, after beating Butler County 8-3 in an opening round matchup, Breckinridge County fell to Daviess County in the Third Region Semifinals. Daviess County notched a hard-fought 1-0 win over Breckinridge County in the 2017 Third Region Baseball Tournament.

Breckinridge County is under the tutelage of head coach Jeremy Bennett. The Mustangs and Fighting Tigers are familiar foes. Muhlenberg County held on to beat Breckinridge County 1-0 in an early-season game in 2017.
