democrat 2016HENDERSON, Ky. (10/19/17) — Democrat Rob Wiederstein, a former prosecutor and retired district judge, filed a “letter of intent” with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance for the Kentucky House of Representatives District 11 – a seat currently held by Republican Robby Mills, a first-term incumbent.

District 11 was recently designated as a competitive district by MYCN2. A “letter of intent” permits a candidate to raise and spend money prior to the opening of the official filing period. Candidates can file for office beginning November 8, 2017.

“We wanted to spend some money to gauge if we’d have any support in the race. This is a first and exploratory step," Wiederstein said. "The letter of intent allowed me to indicate the seriousness of my candidacy to potential democratic challengers. It would also allow for me to wait to file in January, if at all, when my daughter was home from school. Right now, I’m really concerned about the ‘tone’ of the current political climate. The pension crisis is a good example where current and former state employees, like myself, are being blamed for a crisis that most of us had no part in creating. You can have a disagreement and still be civil. You don’t have to blame a particular group. The emphasis needs to be on solving the problem.”

“I hear a lot about ‘jobs’ being the concern of politicians, but I rarely hear anybody talking about good jobs and what those look like," he added. "In my mind we need to reserve taxpayer dollars in economic development for good jobs first. That’s job where you don’t have to work a second job to make ends meet, a job where there’s health insurance, a job that gives a parent hope of being able to send a son or daughter to college. That’s the kind of job that should be available to people.”

District 11 is comprised of much of the northern most part of Henderson County, including the city of Henderson, as well as western parts of Daviess County. Wiederstein worked as a county attorney in Henderson prior to being elected district judge in 1998 and again in 2003. He was uncontested since that time and retired in 2016. He lives with his wife, Cathy, and two adult children in Henderson, Kentucky.
