Berry 5 22HENDERSON, Ky. (5/22/18) — Democratic Challenger Keith Berry claimed the Henderson District 1 Magistrate win in tonight’s Primary Election race to defeat incumbent George Warren — 790 to 288.

Berry is a 25-year Henderson County Sheriff’s Office deputy. He gathered more than 50 percent of the votes and declared the winner.

“My goal is for our county to never increase taxes again due to poor planning,” Berry said. “I offer District 1 the ability to ‘live within our means’ while seeking real progress.”

Warren has held the magistrate seat in Henderson County since 2010. The occupational and net profits tax were two new taxes set forth during Warren’s term, which Berry feels were a “direct result of low reserves and poor planning of the county budget.”

Berry faces Republican JR Stanley in the November General Election District 1 magistrate race.

In other Democratic Primary races, Bruce Todd was defeated by Beth Moran for District 2 after 12 years as Henderson County Magistrate. Moran, a retired educator, narrowly defeated incumbent 2nd District Magistrate Todd, 685 to 625.

No Republican candidates are running for District 2 magistrate.

The district judge’s office was vacated by Charles McCullum, who announced his retirement in January.

Leslie Newman (3,097 votes) easily sealed the deal above the other three candidates for Henderson district judge. Greg Sutton came in second with 1,496. David Curlin and Don Thompson Jr. as the bottom two vote-getters in that race are now out of the running. Newman and Sutton will square off on the November ballot.

In constable races, 2nd District incumbent Jim Smith beat Roger D. Timberlake 536 to 336. In the 5th district, incumbent Jackie Earl Williams defeated Mike Steinmetz 450 to 324. These are Democratic Primary competitions with no Republican candidates listed to run in the November General Election.
