Alexis 1 8DAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. (1/8/18) — Her positive attitude shows in her smile despite having been diagnosed recently with stage 3 congestive heart failure.

Alexis Dunlap, a 19-year-old mother of two young children, received the diagnosis after a doctor’s visit at Baptist Health Madisonville a few days after Christmas.

“In 2014, I was diagnosed with sinus tachycardia,” Dunlap said. “Now, I have congestive heart failure and very limited to what I can do.”

She thought medications would take care of her irregular heartbeat in 2014, but was unable to undergo additional treatment due to meds already prescribed for her epilepsy condition.

Dunlap said she will see heart specialists at Baptist Health in March to talk about other treatment options like a pace maker or future heart transplant. She also mentioned heart problems run frequent among other members of her family.

Until then, she has to limit activities, pointing out that it can be a difficult task with two young boys, 3-month-old Noah and 15-month-old Colton. She resides in Dawson Springs with her partner and father of her children, Jeremy Corrao, who has been very supportive.

“My normal heart rate is in the 110-120 beats per minute at rest,” she said, adding the lining of her heart muscle is too thin to pump the appropriate amount of blood to the rest of her body.

Dunlap attended Hopkins County Central High School, graduating at Morehead High School in 2015.

“As a youth, I though it was cool to do drugs, and finished the rehab program in Morehead,” Dunlap said. “I’ve been clean for a long time. I want to stay positive — that’s how my mother, who raised me as a single parent, taught me how to be. She’s been a great mom and that’s what I want to be for my kids.”

The couple lost their vehicle last week due to constant mechanical problems, Dunlap said, which will make traveling to and from doctor appointments difficult.

Dunlap’s close friend, Jordan Harrell, has created a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise $3,000 or more that would afford Dunlap transportation to doctor visits.
