surfky flurries 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (1/10/18) — County and city officials around Hopkins are getting ready for a possible winter storm this weekend.

Although the weather feels more like spring today with temperatures in the 60s, a strong cold front is expected to arrive Thursday night that could bring a mixed bag of precipitation along with plunging temperatures.

Madisonville city officials said the public works department is preparing road salt and equipment for necessary snow removal to allow safe travel. Hopkins County road crews are also doing the same.

The city asks that residents remove vehicles from roads if possible to allow snow plow passage, noting excess snow could pile up at the ends of driveways in the process.

“We ask for your understanding that while dealing with situations involving this potential amount of accumulation, there is often no other place for the snow to go,” the city wrote in a press release.

Judge-Executive Donnie Carroll said the county has most of its pickup trucks out equipped with snow plows to help expedite snow removal.

“As the weather moves closer, we’ll know more," Carroll said. “We will be spreading salt on bridges and overpasses first. It’s usually all hands on deck during winter weather events.”

NWS in Paducah issued a winter storm watch for the western Kentucky area beginning Thursday night-Friday evening to likely include rain changing over to an icy mix of freezing rain and sleet before it becomes all snow. Significant accumulations of snow and ice are possible that could impact travel Friday morning along with possible scattered loss of power.
