election 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (2/13/18) — Hopkins County District 1 Magistrate Karol Welch has withdrawn from the Primary Election. She plans to serve the rest of her term this year.

Welch says it will be “really hard to say goodbye to everyone,” but she wants to dedicate more time to her husband of 47 years due to his illness.

“My husband is not getting any better,” Welch said. “He tells me that he would like me to stay home a little more. Time goes by quickly.”

He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Dystonia of the neck in 2013, Welch said, and it’s best that she let someone else take over and give the position full-time attention.

“I’m still going to be an advocate for the legalization of marijuana,” Welch said. “I want him to be treated with legal marijuana, because of his severe pain, so that he can do things he enjoys.”

Welch withdrew from the race at 1:30 p.m. today, County Clerk Keenan Cloern’s records show. Welch has served District 1 for several years.

Democrat Darwin Rideout filed for District 1 magistrate in the upcoming Primary Election. He will face Republican opponent Ricky Whitaker in the November General Election.
