KSP CRUISERNORTONVILLE, Ky. (5/14/19) — As summertime approaches and vacationers head out to resorts, state parks and other travel destinations, troopers plan extra patrol along the highways to ensure safety.

Kentucky State Police Post 2 in Madisonville is participating in the national Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign May 20-June 2.

KSP Trooper Rob Austin, Post 2 Spokesman, said the parkways and interstates will have a lot more traffic as Memorial Day approaches, which can create congestion along and near the interchanges and in towns.

Austin explained there will be more people out at area parks, and there is a greater possibility of increased alcohol intake during holiday outings, which results in more inebriated drivers on the highways.

“Wearing a seat belt is very important due to other drivers being inattentive or on cell phones,” Austin said.

Troopers also ask drivers to slow down and move over if possible for emergency vehicles along the roads.

“We will really be watching that this week,” he said, “especially because of increased traffic. Your duty is to slow down to a safe speed or get over if possible.”

During Click It or Ticket, troopers will conduct a “highly visible” seat belt campaign that includes enforcement and media messaging to ensure drivers are buckled up.

Austin reports speed is often a factor related to vehicle collisions, and troopers will be paying close attention to details along the roads.

According to NHTSA, in 2017, there were 10,076 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the U.S. In that same year, 55 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed during the overnight hours of 6 p.m.-5:59 a.m. were not wearing seat belts.

With an increased number of cars on Kentucky highways during the Memorial Day holiday, KSP believes it is imperative drivers and all passengers wear seat belts, and for those behind the wheel to stay alert and refrain from aggressive driving.

Of the 725 highway fatalities reported last year in Kentucky, 52.8 percent were not wearing a seat belt.
