HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (2/3/17) — A Nortonville hospice care patient’s last wish was granted this morning in Madisonville.

Timothy “Todd” Cummings was baptized poolside at Comfort Inn with the help of Hospice of Western Kentucky’s caregivers and counselors.

Rev. Darel Gates, pastor at Nortonville Gospel Light Holiness Church, said he has known Cummings and his family for 20 years.

“He will be baptized in Jesus’ name,” the pastor said.

Cummings was carefully lowered into the water on a special motorized chair.

Gates quoted a Bible passage from Mark 16, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.”

After the ceremony, supporting members of the church spoke praise, shouting “Amen.”

After Cummings was lifted from the water, he said, “I feel good.”

Members of Cummings’ family also offered support in witnessing the Holy ritual.

“His birthday is in four days,” said his sister, Rebecca Cobb. “I think it’s good that his church takes time to visit him while he’s sick.”

Emilee Diaz, social worker for Hospice of Western Kentucky, said every patient has a team comprised of a social worker, spiritual counselor and a nurse.

“We recognize that with hospice, a lot of our patients have end of life wishes,” Diaz said. “Hospice is not about dying, it’s about living. If they have a wish or a goal that we can help achieve, we will assist in any way we can to make that happen.”
