interstate 69 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (12/2/14) ― Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 2 Chief District Engineer Kevin McClearn told the Madisonville City Council that signage for I69 through Hopkins County should be up as soon as the end of next year.

McClearn gave the council an update of KYTC’s projects along the Pennyrile Parkway/I69 through western Kentucky during Monday’s regular council meeting.

As interchanges along the Pennyrile are being upgraded to interstate standards, the intersection of Brown Road and South Drive at Interchange 42 will precipitate the closing of the South Drive entrance off Brown Road, said McClearn.

“Safety is at the core of that decision,” he said.

McClearn said he expects the South Drive/Brown Road closure to be done in February or March and that the KYTC will send out a press release prior to the work being performed.

“The pavement probably will be removed and (the ground) seeded back. The city will have to maintain that area or perhaps get someone to adopt a spot,” he said.

McClearn also talked about other projects in the city including the widening of U.S. 41A from North Main Street to the General Electric plant area. The project calls for a five-lane highway phasing down to a three-lane as it runs west toward G.E. Sidewalks will also be a part of that expansion and could include extended sidewalks to accommodate Mahr Park.

Pride Avenue will be upgraded to widen the shoulders of the road, where it intersects with the railroad crossing.

“You’re looking at a vast improvement there,” said McClearn.

McClearn said that the bid has been let for College Drive improvements with work likely to be started in the spring.

In other business, the council adopted a resolution authorizing Mayor David Jackson to enter an agreement with the Department for Local Government for the demolition of the old Madisonville city building. The funding will come from coal severance funds allocated for the project, said Daron Jordan.

No municipal nor executive orders were read and there were no committee reports nor utility connections during the meeting.

Councilman Tom Morgan spoke to the council and the audience asking that everyone consider donating blood during the Lions Club Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11.
